Scars & Acne Scars

What kind of scars can be treated?

Scars & acne scars are a common problem for many patients as they frequently develop after trauma to the skin. Scarring is part of the natural healing process of your skin. As the body repairs the wound, fibrotic tissue replaces the injured skin, forming a protective tissue. The type of tissue scar that develops depends on the cause of injury, the depth of the wound, its location, and other variables.

Very common and most displeasing are acne scars. These are sometimes very visible on people’s faces and force them to wear make-up in public.

Types of Acne Scars

  • Atrophic scars – those are caused by a loss of tissue.
  • Hypertrophic scars – caused by an excess of tissue.

Four main types of acne scars are included in these two categories: ice pick scars, boxcar, rolling, and keloid scars. (Note that Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation is not a true acne scar but rather a discolouration that occurs around the pimple or wound. This is a very common problem for people who suffer from acne and can also be addressed by laser treatment.)

How does the laser treatment work?

Our scar and acne scar treatment can address all of the above scar types. We do so using an array of advanced technologies, including our Clearlift and Dye VL laser applicators. The treatments replace compacted scar tissue with healthy new collagen, improving the appearance of scars or removing them all together. When compared to surgical approaches, these none-invasive treatments are much lower in risk and pose very little downtime. Scar revision process can take up to 8 treatments with excellent clinical outcomes.

About the Treatment

About your first consultation

Before your laser scarring treatment, we will ask you to visit the clinic to examine your skin and discuss your concerns. We will perform a skin test at this initial consultation to allow an initial assessment of your skin tolerability to the laser. This will allow us to tailor your personal treatment plan specifically to your skin. At this consultation, and throughout the treatment course, we will take photos for you to document your skin progress.

How many treatments will you need?

Every patient is individual with individual needs, and treatment depends on size and depth of the treated area. While most patients will see the first sign of positive results after one session, we recommend undergoing at least three sessions for the best results and long-lasting effects. Each session should be spaced approximately 3 weeks apart.

Before & After the treatment

We recommend that you should avoid direct exposure to the sun prior to the treatment. Depending on your skin’s sensitivity, after your skin is treated, the treated areas may immediately appear red. This effect usually lasts for the first 24-48 hours but can be the case for up to 7 days. It is highly recommended that you avoid the sun for at least two weeks and protect the skin with sunscreen with at least SPF 50.
